Proper bricklaying technique is as important as the quality of the bricks themselves. Even the best bricks will result in a weak wall if laid incorrectly. Here is a basic guide to bricklaying for new builders and site supervisors.
Tools You Will Need
- Brick trowel
- Spirit level
- String line and pins
- Rubber mallet
- Tape measure
- Bolster chisel and hammer (for cutting bricks)
Mixing Mortar
A standard mortar mix for brickwork is 1 part cement to 5–6 parts sand by volume. Add water gradually until the mix is firm but workable — it should hold its shape when squeezed but not be crumbly or runny.
Laying the First Course
The first course is the most important. Dry-lay your first course without mortar to check spacing and alignment. Then apply a bed of mortar and lay bricks to a string line to ensure they are straight and level. Check with a spirit level frequently.
Bonding Pattern
Use a stretcher bond (bricks overlapping by half a brick length) for standard walls. This creates a strong interlocking structure. Never align vertical joints between courses.
Consistent Mortar Joints
Aim for 10mm mortar joints throughout. Inconsistent joint thickness weakens the wall and looks unprofessional when rendered.
